The Textile and Apparel industry is diverse and heterogeneous, covering a wide range of products from high-tech synthetic yarns to wool fabrics, from cotton bed linen to outdoor non-woven fabrics and treatments to “haute couture” fabric. Counterfeit textile and apparel items represent a significant and growing problem with many billions of dollars worth of seizures and losses incurred in the UK, USA and around the world. Given the global scale of this problem, there is not only a critical need for suppliers, manufacturers, retailers and brand owners to have a means to determine the authenticity of the products but there is also the need to be able to assure the end-consumer that products throughout the supply chain are 100% genuine.

Textiles and Apparel FAQ
Textiles and Apparel Endorsements

Technology is being used to control counterfeiting, to make it easier to distinguish genuine items from fakes. This technology includes the use of holograms and other hard-to-copy trademarks, heat transfer labels, invisible inks, unique thread and merchandise-tracking technology. However, many of these conventional methods are often ineffective if companies cannot control their labeling supply and conduct regular

audits. More than often, it is difficult to discern the difference between genuine and fake products by visible identification as counterfeiters have developed ways to digitally reproduce many of these labels within a few hours of the item being released. For the textile industry, more advanced, covert methods, that cannot be copied or digitally reproduced, are needed.

Applied DNA Solution
In collaboration with the Textile Centre of Excellence and Yorkshire Forward (the economic development agency for Northern England), APDN is DNA marking yarn, woven fabrics, threads, labels and finished garments. We have formed liaisons with Yorkshire textile yarn manufacturers, weavers, finishers, woven and non-woven labelers and garment manufacturers.

Applied DNA Sciences has developed patents and amassed commercial experience related to the marking of fabrics with SigNature DNA and adducts of DNA markers with optical reporters. We utilize large, complex plant-derived and encrypted genomic (DNA) sequences to prepare SigNature DNA markers. The utility of these markers as a security mark has been validated in studies funded by the Department of Energy at the US National Laboratories. Early deployment of our SigNature DNA markers have already shown that they are difficult or impossible to copy in scenarios when other security approaches have been rendered ineffective by organized counterfeiting criminals.
