Extra-long staple cotton (ELS) cotton also called American Pima, is renowned for its superior fiber length, strength and natural luster. Because of the fineness of ELS cotton, more fibers can be spun into a yarn of a given count, which will enhance the feel and softness, drapeability and brilliance of color of the fabric.

Pima ELS Cotton Endorsements

FiberTyping for Textiles and Apparel
Just as a person’s DNA specifies all of their unique qualities, natural materials like ELS cotton, contain genomic DNA that can be utilized to authenticate originality. The unique signature that the genomic DNA from mature cotton leaves behind is ideal to forensically authenticate cotton fiber, yarn, greige, finished fabric and apparel.
In an effort to preserve the quality and authenticity of all ELS cottons manufactured around the world, Applied DNA Sciences developed a proprietary DNA authentication methodology that can verify that a Pima or ELS labeled product is genuine.

Trademarked as FiberTyping, it is a commercial test that can differentiate between Pima and Upland cotton from fiber to finished fabric and apparel, adding accountability to all stages of the textile manufacturing process. Native residual DNA is extracted from mature cotton fiber and subjected to PCR amplification and DNA Analysis. We have been able to extend our genotyping of finished fabrics or garments to the genetic analysis of single fibers.

Knowing the forensic identity of cotton is revolutionizing the textile and apparel industry. FiberTyping provides definitive, forensic proof of authentication. To find out how you can benefit from FiberTyping please contact our Customer Satisfaction Team.
